Inner hull inspection Ballast Tank
I just want to show you guys my experience doing Inner Hull Inspection (IHI) inside ballast tank. First before entering tank PTW must be signed by crew doing the job and the master. Risk assessment should be discussed and understood. Before entering gas check must be conducted and also while inside the tank, frequent checks (every 5 minutes) of atmosphere must be reported to bridge. All rescue equipment must be standby and standby man must always be present outside the entrance of the tank.
When checking inside ballast tank you must first watch your step because it's dark inside by just using flashlight. Checking the "sacrificing anode" must be conducted, is it in good condition. Mostly the area surrounding the anode will have corrosion.
You should also check the bulkhead for any wearing/hole of the plating. Usually if the tank is exposed to corrosion the probability of the tank to be wear is high.
This picture was taken at the third plattform inside the tank. When going up and down using the stairs you must be very careful and use both hand to hold on the ladder. Sometimes because of the seawater the stairs are wet and the risk of slip, trip and fall is high.
Thank you!
