The Lost Continent of Kumari Kandam

A continent is one of Earth's seven main division of land.

The continents that we have right now are :

  1. Asia
  2. Africa
  3. North America
  4. South America
  5. Antarctica
  6. Europe
  7. Australia

But do you know there was a Continent before this that is no more right now? Where did it go?

The LEMURIA CONTINENT is a hypothetical lost land located
in the Indian Ocean.

Some Tamil writers such as Devaneya Pavanar have associated Lemuria with Kumari Kandam, a legendary sunken landmass mentioned in the Tamil literature, claiming that it was the cradle of civilization.

Kumari Kandam refers to a mythical lost continent with an ancient Tamil civilization, located south of present-day India, in the Indian Ocean.

The story of Kumari Kandam is not regarded as just a story, but seems to be linked with nationalistic sentiments. It has been claimed that the Pandiyan Kings of Kumari Kandam were the rulers of the whole Indian Continent. When Kumari Kandam was submerged, the people who were living there (the citizens) spread across the world. Hence, the lost continent was also the cradle of human civilization.

So, how much truth is there in the story of Kumari Kandam? According to researches at India's National Institute of Oceanography, the sea level was lower by 100m about 14,500 years ago and by 60m about 10,000 years ago.

Hence, it is entirely possible that there was once a land bridge connecting the island of Sri Lanka to mainland India. As the rate of global warming increased between 12,000 and 10,000 years ago, the rising sea levels resulted in periodic flooding. This would have submerged prehistoric settlements that were located around the low-lying coastal areas of India and Sri Lanka.
