Guide to Be a Perfect Cadet On Board

Guide to Be a Perfect Cadet On Board

First of all, being a cadet on board is the crucial part of being an Officer or Engineer. But the road to achieving your goal is not going to be a piece of cake. With being the one of the lowest rank on board, with the least experience among the crew and most important with the least salary (well some will not receive salary), In a nutshell it is not going to be easy. Well i will try to help out and share my experience on board. So you can make use some tips fruitful for you to make your life a tiny bit easier on board.

First thing to prepare before going on board is to prepare your items:

         1. Toiletries
         2. All of your modular Certificates
         3. Passport
         4. Seaman Book
         5. Seafarers Identification Card
         6. Books which you used at your place of study(very important)
         7. Laptop,Charger, Earphones and etc
         8. Medicine if you need
         9. Stationary
       10. Food or snacks in case
       11. Your training book

When you go on board, try to wish everyone you see. Put your bags in your allocated cabin. If there is a reliever , make sure to familiarize with the ship and the duties of the cadet your relieving on that ship. Then go to bridge, meet the Captain and submit your certificates and sign your ship employment agreement. Then your journey on board officially starts. Next report to Chief Officer for your work.

Throughout your time on board make sure to be punctual for your work and watch. At least 5 minutes before your officer on watch comes to bridge. As a cadet most probably you will be the youngest on the ship, so respect others, wish them be good with everyone on board. You would not know who will help you at what time. So its is good to be friends with everyone as they will be your family for the rest of your contract on board.

Make sure you revise your subjects well because Officers or Engineers will expect you to posses at least basic knowledge. Try to be active and willing to do over time work and most important ask questions about anything you do not know. This will give a good impression on you, so your life will be a bit smooth.

Lastly , take safety into consideration. No matter what ,if you think the job assigned to you is dangerous or you cannot do ,straight away inform the person in charge that you cannot do the job. DO NOT TRY TO BE A HERO! One mistake on board it could cost you your life. So value your life, make sure you are wearing proper Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) when your working aloft, on deck or inside enclosed spaces. If proper PPE is not provided , you have the right to decline the job assigned and state the reason for that.

In conclusion, being a cadet on board is a great experience. Once in a lifetime , try to make good memories and try to gain knowledge as much as possible. Being a cadet has its perks. Despite being the lowest rank, we can not be held responsible for any mistakes caused by us, except if we break few rules on the ships. As you are the youngest guy on the ship your superiors will bring you to shore leave and most of the time will take care of your expenses. Be proud being a cadet on ship as you will be the all rounder for deck and bridge works and also a future officer or engineer. I this would have helped all of you. Thank you and Good Luck.
